Am I married?
For the umpteenth time, I asked that question
with myself because it kept on pestering me
every minute of the day. Since I couldn't
discuss this puzzle with anyone, I tried to find
the answer online.
I went through several online blogs and writers
expressed different opinions regarding my
confused situation like it said that the bride
and groom needed to be true to their words
during the wedding vows or else, they couldn't
be truly married.
At least, I was right about one thing and that
was – Samara couldn't call herself Ashar's wife casual country wedding dresses
right now.
So, the grand wedding that was witnessed by
the entire country was just a fake event. The
famous, lovey-dovey couple wasn't a married
couple.
Anyways, there were online articles which
explicated that if someone is faking to be a
bride or a groom in a Church and proclaimed
all the vows in front of God, they could be
called married because God is their witness.
That was a religious view. Well then, there was
a chance that according to Christian religion, I
was married to Ashar.
I smacked my forehead with my palm in
frustration.
I didn't want to accept the religious view.
"Am I looking good? Please be honest."
Carol's voice snapped me out of my
bothersome thoughts.
I was standing outside the venue of the Noah's
brother's birthday party with Carol. It had been
three days since I'd resigned from Hobsons
and no one had contacted me from there.
I looked at her, chewing the corner of my
lower lip, "Yes, you're looking perfect."
She was looking cute and indeed, beautiful in
a navy blue, cocktail dress with neck-length,
copper hair, making her look slender. Her
dangling, small earrings were twinkling in the
night lights.
I didn't know about Noah, but some of the
guys in the party were certainly going to steal
glimpses of her.
"Thank you Sanaya for coming. I'm very
nervous today." She chuckled tensely.
I rolled my eyes, "Relax, Babe."
I gathered all my black hair and brought them
all forward on my left shoulder. My previous
hair color had faded now.
"But listen, if I see you get busy with Noah and
leaving me alone, I would leave, okay?"
She grinned teasingly, "You won't be alone.
Noah's family has connection with Hobsons.
Maybe, they are going to be there in the party."
I looked at her disbelievingly.
"You didn't tell me why you stopped working
for Hobsons." She continued.
No, no. I couldn't afford to see any of the
Hobsons. I was running away from them.
"Anyways, the party is grand. Many rich
families are there." She grabbed my hand and
began dragging me to follow her.

"Wait, Carol-"
My voice was lost due to the extraordinary
loud music as she dragged me inside Noah's
house.
?
After the cake-cutting ceremony, the guests
were served dinner. I was sitting alone on one
of the tables which were placed at the
backside of the house.
Carol was not very distant from my eyes as
she promised me that she would not leave me
alone. She was with Noah on the dance floor. I
didn't know till yet that did she confess her
feelings to him or not, but, by the look of
Noah's expression, he seemed happy in her
company.
I looked around, observing the guests. With
their expensive and sophisticated attire, I could
tell that most of them were affluent. Noah's
brother was surrounded by a group of people
who were giving him wrapped items – probably
birthday gifts.
He blushed a little and then accepted the gifts.
I further moved my gaze boringly to observe
some other people, but, then my eyes stopped
at the familiar face that came into my dream
every night since that Church incident and
haunted me with his anger because in my
dreams, he got to know everything about his
wedding ceremony.
Ashar narrowed his eyes at me and I
immediately looked away, pretending to be
oblivion about his presence. But, I was only
fooling myself because after few seconds, he
was standing in front of me.
I felt my hands went cold.
"Hey Sanaya, what are you doing here?" Ashar's
question made me stood up from my chair.
The color drained from my face as my mind
reminded me that he could be called my
husband.
"I'm here with a friend." I responded.
He glanced at the empty table, "But then, why
are you sitting alone?"
"She's on the dance floor with her almost
boyfriend."
Soon, Ashar would send you to prison.
Seriously brain, just shut off.
"You okay?" Ashar asked.
"Yeah, why?"
"You seem uncomfortable."
"No, not at all." I tried to smile.
I felt like strangling Carol right now with my
own hands. She brought me here in front of
this man when I was trying to hide myself
from him.
He gasped, "Your friend left you for her
boyfriend and Samara left me in this party all
alone."
"What do you mean?" I asked casually,
although, hearing her name already made me
panic.
"Mind if I sit here because I'm so bored in this
party?"
He looked at the chair opposite of me.
I nodded in reply.
He unbuttoned his casual, black blazer and sat
in front of me.
"Samara had some other party to attend and I
could not miss this party because we have
good relations with Rogers."
I sat on my chair uncomfortably.
If he would find out about me, he would not
even want to look at me, but right now, he was
sharing a table with me.
"I can't believe you're not enjoying the party
when you said you know the host of the
event." I let out a short laugh.
"It's because the relation with them is strictly
business. I'll leave in few minutes."
He looked at the waiter who passed by and
snapped his fingers to get his attention. The
waiter came to him and offered him drinks. He
took one glass and put it on the table.

The waiter walked away.
"I got it." I said while observing him.
Ashar wrapped his fingers around the stem of
the glass in front of him and took a sip from
it. I saw his adam's apple moved as he gulped
down the liquid.
I licked my lips unconsciously and looked
away as I felt bothered by the sight.
"So, how are things going at my house? I hope
my mother doesn't bother you with her fashion
advises." He placed the glass back on table.
"I have left the job, you didn't know?"
It had been three days.
He stared at me astonishingly, "What. Why?"
"I was bored." I tried to keep my answer short.
I had dropped my résumé to few cafes and
stores near my apartment, but, I got no
response so far. I had to reconsider those jobs
which weren't paying enough because I had no
other option left until I would get a college
degree.
He nodded his head thoughtfully, "But, I
thought this job was paying you enough."
I pretended to look towards the dance floor to
avoid meeting his eyes and wished silently that
he just dropped that topic.
I tried to locate Carol and Noah on the dance
floor, but they were not there. She was there
few minutes ago.
"My friend is not there. I wonder where she
went." I glanced at Ashar.
He moved his head towards the dance floor,
"You said she was with her almost boyfriend.
May be, they went somewhere."
"Yeah, but, I asked her not to leave without
informing me." I mused.
"Wait for few minutes, may be, she is
somewhere inside the house."
I agreed with him and stopped myself from
being restless for no reason and waited for her
to show up.
The light music was playing in the background
and the guests were enjoying their dinner.
"Did my Mom say something to you or anyone
else?" He persisted, "I didn't know about your
resignation because I was not at home."
It's because I was trying to run away from you.
"No, no. Your Mom is a generous woman." I
said hesitantly.
"Right. How old are you, Sanaya?"
"Eighteen, why?"
"Just wondering why my Mom called you
young." He replied and took the glass in his
hand, "Tell me more about yourself like what
you do besides working?"
"I-I grew up in a foster home." I began
hesitantly, "I recently completed my high
school and now wants a college degree."
He got surprised, but then composed himself,
"I'm sorry, I didn't know that."
"It's okay."
I tried to locate Carol once again, but, she was
nowhere to be seen and that made me slightly
worried because I could not leave her with
Noah alone as I was still not able to trust that
guy.
I grabbed my phone to call her. If she was
with Noah, she could at least inform me. She
knew I was waiting for her.
Ashar stood up from his chair. My gaze
followed him, "You should find your friend.
Let's see each other again sometime."
Carol was not picking up my call. Damn, where
the hell she was!
I stood up from my chair as well and asked to
him anxiously, "Can you help me?"
I didn't know why I asked for his help when I
was scared of his presence, but, may be, with
his help, I could find her in lesser time.
Ashar raised his brows in confusion, waiting
for me to give an explanation.
"I need to find my friend because I don't trust
the guy she's with. I just need to make sure
that she is fine."
Negative thoughts were flooding my head. May
be, because I was doubtful about Noah as I
had seen him once sexually harassing a girl at
school and even the complaint was also
registered against him, but no action was
taken because he was from rich family.
However, Carol said that it was some rumor
created against him, but I didn't believe that
because I was a witness of his crime.
I was waiting for Carol to see his true nature
by herself because I knew she would not listen
to me as she was blinded by her likeness for
the boy.
Ashar frowned for a moment, before saying,
"Let's first start from the house."
